State of Maryland Wins Third Consecutive Governor's Cup in Gymnastics

Terrapin women gymnasts finish second overall.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland posted a season-high 191.700 and seniors Stacy Breidenbach (Hillsdale, N.J./Pleasant Valley (Pa.)) and Megyn Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) finished first and second in the all-around competition as the University of Maryland finished second overall and helped the state of Maryland capture its third straight Governor's Cup.

A crowd of 400 at Ritchie Coliseum saw the University of Maryland and Towson University combine to defeat the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University 383.375 - 382.775. North Carolina State University won the overall competition with a 192.125 as Maryland finished closely behind with a 191.700. Towson University followed with a 191.675 and the University of North Carolina scored a 190.650.
In addition to setting a season-high team score, Maryland also set season-highs in three of the four events as they scored a 48.100 on vault, 47.950 on bars and 48.000 on floor.

Breidenbach, in capturing her second all-around title of the season, had her best outing of the season as she scored season-highs on vault (9.625), bars (9.600), floor (9.675) and all-around (38.575). Byrnes finished closely behind Breidenbach with a season-high 38.475 in the all-around. She also set season-highs on vault (9.625), beam (9.725) and floor (9.700) and her scores on beam and floor earned her second place finishes in both.

For Towson University, junior Liane Williams performed exceptionally as she took first place on floor (9.825) and vault (9.800). Freshman Brooke Wilson led the way for the Tar Heels, finishing third in the all-around (38.350) and first on beam (9.750). For the Wolfpack, freshman Monica Berry finished fourth in the all-around with a 38.300 and freshman Kara Beth Charles took first place on bars with a 9.775.

The Terrapins' record is now 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the EAGL. The Tigers are now 3-6, 2-4 in the EAGL, the Tar Heels are 4-3, 0-3 in the EAGL, and the Wolfpack are 4-2, 3-0 in the EAGL.

The Terrapins' next meet will be on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Morgantown, W.V. to take on the University of West Virginia Mountaineers.
